Making a Difference

Raicel

Raicel wanted to access his backyard so that he could play outside with his kids. A grassy patch near the back gate prevented his wheelchair from going through the yard. He also needed to enter and exit his home near his driveway.

CIL Broward partner Amramp designed an L-shaped ramp specifically to meet Raicel's mobility needs. Raicel is thrilled by the results and now gets to enjoy more time with his family and his backyard

Nina M.

Nina M's front door and walkway have steps that make it hard to get in and out of her house. She was constantly afraid she was going to fall out of her chair while navigating.

New ramps for her walkway and threshold now let Nina go to and from her house with ease. Nina also had her bathroom fitted with grab bars so that she could bathe more easily. Once a place of stress, Nina says her new bathrooms are like a relaxing oasis.

Bryan Rios

Bryan Rios is in his late twenties and has severe Cerebral Palsy. Bryan's disability has created barriers that have impacted his independence. He needs assistance with his activities of daily living.

When Bryan's home health aide was quarantined due to COVID-19, his mother Felicita took over helping him. Felicita knew she needed a solution and called the Center for Independent Living of Broward and explained her problem. CIL Broward staff were able to determine that a Hoyer lift would be the best solution. The lift is attached to a ceiling track that would move Bryan from setting to setting.

Within four days of his mom contacting CIL Broward, Bryan had a Hoyer lift installed in his home, preventing him from moving into a nursing home, and helping him maintain his independence.

"This was an incredible act of kindness, goodwill, and sacrifice," said Hinds, CEO of the Center for Independent Living of Broward. "Christopher Fancett, traveled 1,100 miles, to give a helping hand to a mother and son during Easter weekend to give the family an opportunity to keep Bryan safe and at home."
