On Friday, August 9, 2019, The Miami Marlins honored the Center for Independent Living of Broward as the team's Non-Profit Partner for Friday night's game against the Atlanta Braves to commemorate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The event was also covered by the Sun-Sentinel newspaper.
 
The event's main corporate sponsors included TriNet, Ocean Conversions & Mobility, Owner Builder Assistance Corp, ERGOMEDIC USA INC., Moss Krusick CPA's and Advisors, and Progressive HealthWorks, Inc.
 
The Center for Independent Living of Broward's mission is to offer assistance to people with disabilities in fulfilling their goals of independence and self-sufficiency. The Center has assisted over 100,000 Broward County residents since 1991 and is the only agency in Broward County to offer services to people with all disabilities.

CILB Helps Prepare for Hurricanes
The Center for Independent Living of Broward recently shared our Hurricane Preparation Brochure to help people plan for Hurricane Dorian. This information can show you what to do before, during and after any major storm. The Center for Independent Living of Broward can help you stay safe before, during and after a hurricane
The brochure was created by last year's Leadership CILB class. It helps people with disabilities understand what to do when a hurricane or other weather-related emergency is imminent. As Broward County residents are aware, our area often experiences severe weather between June and November. The Center for Independent Living of Broward believes it is important to know the needed steps to prepare for such emergencies.

New Housing Assistance Program for Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach

The CILB will collaborate with Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach on a new Housing Program
While The Center for Independent Living of Broward assists all Broward County residents with disabilities find accessible housing and remove barriers, the Center is proud to announce a new program in the Housing Department. Under the new plan, the CILB will collaborate with the cities of Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach to offer strategic financial to assist people with disabilities in these cities who qualify.

Remembering Disability Rights Advocate Marca Bristo

Disability Rights Advocate Marca Bristo will be remembered for advocating for people with disabilities
The Center for Independent Living of Broward is sad to announce the passing of Marca Bristo on September 8. Ms. Bristo was a pioneer in fighting for disability rights.
 
Marca was a "key player in passing the Americans with Disabilities Act" in 1990. She advocated for people for several years helping form the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL)She also served as the head of the National Council on Disability and the president of the United States International Council on Disabilities.
 
The Center for Independent Living of Broward joins the community of people with disabilities in mourning a fearless leader for disability rights.

Consumer's new laptop and assistive technology helps him look for a job

Andrew Salmon received a new laptop and bag (below) and will use his new assistive technology to find a job
Andrew Salmon is a 50-year-old Fort Lauderdale resident who is blind. He was referred by Vocational Rehabilitation for assistive technology. 
 
Mr. Salmon came to the Center for Independent Living of Broward to get help using a computer. Specifically, he needed JAWS and Dragon Naturally Speaking to help him communicate online. 
 
Communications Specialist Jason Michaels taught Mr. Salmon how to use JAWS and Dragon Naturally Speaking.  Andrew was given a new laptop with the assistive technology software. He was also provided a brief refresher course on how to use Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
 
Thanks to receiving the new tools, he will become more active in the community. He will also be able to look for, and obtain, a job.

Post-Secondary Programs for  People with Disabilties Are Available Through Several Programs
Many students with disabilities strive to graduate high school and obtain further education. Some students with disabilities get confused about the availability of assistance.
 
However, the Center for Independent Living of Broward reminds you that there are options that can help. 
 
The Center for Independent Living of Broward's Youth Services Program and The Able Trust Florida High School High Tech are collaborating with each other. The information they provide helps local students with disabilities obtain the education and skills they need to get their dream job.
 
The Able Trust Florida High School High Tech (HSHT) is designed to provide high school students with all types of disabilities the opportunity to explore jobs or post-secondary education leading to technology-related careers.
 
The programs have been proven to help lower high school dropout rates and increase self-esteem in the lives of participating students with disabilities. We are happy to help inform students with disabilities of all their rights.
