CILB and CareerSource Broward Partner to Give Employment Opportunities to Young Adults with Disabilities

November 1, 2019

The Center for Independent Living of Broward is proud to announce it has been awarded $53,355 by CareerSource Broward for its Jobs for Youth program. This generous funding will prepare twenty-four youth with disabilities, ages 17-24 transitioning from high school to adulthood opportunities to develop independent living and employment skills through paid work-based opportunities.

Each student receives a needs assessment identifying their immediate and long-term educational and employment needs, along with any supplemental supports necessary to sustain an independent way of life.

People with disabilities are an untapped population within the labor market, despite their want to be employed. The program allows participants to obtain jobs, increasing their earning potential and ability to live independently, while also helping to dispel myths surrounding hiring people with disabilities.

The Center offers an 8,900 square foot building used for life and soft skills instruction, including a computer lab with ten workstations, a wheelchair accessible bus for transportation, and sign language interpreters. At the Center, students learn the basic skills of daily living through individual and group counseling and instruction. Examples include goal setting, accessing transportation, financial planning, benefits planning, stress management, time management and utilizing community resources. Youth work with their navigator to learn employment skills through workshops featuring career exploration, etiquette training and development, resume development, career planning, computer training, and job search skills.

Participants receive paid internships for 6-8 weeks at businesses throughout Broward County. While on the job site, youth gain valuable employment skills and experience to help prepare them for their future in the workforce. Examples of jobs include technology associates, customer service representatives, merchandising stock assistants, sales clerks, cashiers, packing clerks, as well as engineering and maintenance technicians.

The Center invites all Out of School Youth with disabilities looking for jobs to contact the Center for Independent Living of Broward at 954-722-6400.
