High School High Tech (HSHT) Senior, Jeffrey Nieves received a Dell laptop computer after submitting a short essay about his pursuit of his academic and life goals. Out of hundreds of nominations received and from those, 35 students selected by The Able Trust, Jeffrey was the only Broward student awarded a laptop after submitting a compelling essay on how the computer will assist him achieve his goal to receive a certificate in child care and attend a four year university. Jeffrey is a student with low level Aspergers and Depression who attends Whispering Pines High School and completing a practicum part-time at Sheridan Technical Center for a teaching certificate.
The Able Trust is a 501(c)(3) non-profit public/private organization whose mission is to be a key leader in providing Floridians with disabilities opportunities for successful employment. The Able Trust's youth programs work to reduce the dropout rate of youth with disabilities and improve their participation in employment-related activities. These programs focus on building self-esteem, developing personal leadership skills, and preparing young adults with disabilities for life beyond high school.
