Empowering Independence: A Heartwarming Collaboration Brings Freedom to Marie

How one woman’s need for a wheelchair ramp united neighbors, nonprofits, and local businesses to restore her independence

At CIL Broward, our mission is to empower individuals with disabilities to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Recently, we had the privilege of being part of an inspiring story that exemplifies the power of community and compassion.

Marie Griffin, a resilient woman facing mobility challenges, found herself confined to her home, unable to navigate the steps without assistance. Her neighbor, Cookie Linda, who had previously lost her daughter, sought to donate her late daughter's wheelchair ramp to someone in need. Upon meeting Marie and witnessing her situation, Cookie was determined to help.

Despite their efforts, they encountered obstacles in installing the ramp due to cost and fit issues. Undeterred, Cookie reached out to WSVN's "Help Me Howard," bringing attention to Marie's plight. This call for help resonated with our team at CIL Broward.

Recognizing the urgency, we collaborated with Next Day Access, a company specializing in accessibility solutions. Although Cookie's ramp wasn't compatible with Marie's home, Next Day Access generously offered a new ramp at a significant discount. CIL Broward covered the remaining costs, ensuring Marie received the assistance she needed.

The installation marked a turning point for Marie. After months of isolation, she could finally step outside independently, embracing the sunlight and freedom she had longed for. Her gratitude was palpable, and Cookie's unwavering support played a pivotal role in this transformation.

This story underscores the impact of community collaboration and the importance of accessible solutions. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Cookie Linda, Next Day Access, and the "Help Me Howard" team for their roles in restoring Marie's independence.

This exciting 20-hour hands-on camp will teach you:
��‍�� Workplace Readiness & Soft Skills – Digital literacy, interview prep, and mock interviews.
�� Kitchen Safety & Basics – Essential cooking techniques and food safety tips.
�� Job Exploration – Learn about careers in the culinary arts and take a career assessment.
�� Self-Advocacy & Independent Living Skills – Gain knowledge about ADA/IDEA and practical life skills.
